Our General Surgeons in North Lakes

General surgery focuses on the abdominal contents including the appendix, bile ducts, colon, gallbladder, liver, oesophagus, pancreas, small bowel, stomach and thyroid gland. General surgeons have to be knowledgeable about treating conditions in all these areas of the body.

General surgeons may be on-call to serve the A and E facility of a hospital as well conducting their own practice as they are often called on to provide emergency trauma surgery.

General surgeons are also practitioners of laparoscopic surgery. This relatively new, minimally invasive technique uses cameras and small instruments inserted through small, 3 to 15mm incisions to perform procedures that once were considered traumatic for the patient. This technique allows the surgeon to treat the patient without causing collateral, undue trauma to the surrounding tissue and other organs. Appendices, gallbladders and colons are removed these days by using this laparoscopic technique.

General Surgeons Australia (GSA)

The GSA is the governing body for general surgeons in Australia. All general surgeons in Australia are required to undergo training in trauma surgery. Trauma care falls under a general surgeon’s official responsibilities and they are trained as well in providing stabilisation procedures that allow them to proceed with surgery. They also are called on to provide consultation services to surgical and trauma intensive care units.
